The wedding was disrupted by around ten helicopters full of paparazzi circling overhead, with security guards using infrared binoculars to sweep the grounds and finding one photographer who had hidden in the shrubbery since 1:30 in the morning. Roughly 220 guests attended, including Andy Warhol, Cher, Tom Cruise, Carrie Fisher, and Diane Keaton, with Madonna wearing a custom gown by her Like a Virgin tour designer, Marlene Stewart, paired with a black bowler hat and veil, while Penn wore an off-the-rack Gianni Versace suit. The couple later honeymooned at the Highlands Inn in Carmel, California, and divorced in January 1989.
