Noah Cullen and John “Joker” Jackson, two members of a chain gang (Sidney Poitier and Tony Curtis) use a vehicular accident as an opportunity for escape; unfortunately for them there is quite a bit of racial tension between them, (they are fighting as the accident happens; they cannot even agree on whether to travel North or South,) and so they must overcome their enmity and cooperate if they are to successfully gain their freedom from the law. Unfortunately, for some people of certain generations coming to this movie late, the setup is virtually a cliché. I first saw the situation spoofed on the Warner Brothers’  D' Fightin' Ones  (1961) cartoon short when I was a kid in the early 70s; and variations after that even include  Who Framed Roger Rabbit  (1988) at least for a short segment. Levensboom in Mexico Vervolgens vliegen we door naar Mexico. Hier is de Levensboom,  Arbol de la Vida  , diepgeworteld in de cultuur. In de tijd van de Inca’s had deze boom al een belangrijke betekenis. Met de komst van de Europeanen werd er een christelijk sausje over de levensboom gegoten en zijn er sindsdien veel beelden gemaakt van de levensboom met Adam en Eva en de slang er in verwerkt. Deze zijn zeer populair en worden ook bij huwelijken geschonken, omdat ze symbool staan voor hoop en voorspoed.

Classic, early Hitchcock spy thriller in which some old lady (Dame May Whitty ) impossibly vanishes aboard a train (elements from which have been used by others ad infinitum.) The only person who is seemingly aware of her disappearance and admits to having seen her is a young lady (Margaret Lockwood ) who has just suffered from a blow to the head. Could it be a hallucination? A folk musicologist (Michael Redgrave) teams up with her in order to find out. What motive could everyone (an assorted lot of character comprised of a couple of adulterers, a brain surgeon (Paul Lukas,) a mute nurse/nun, a duchess, a magician, a couple of (gay?) cricket obsessed Englishmen (Basil Radford and Naunton Wayne,) a waiter or maybe even the whole kitchen staff, etc.) who denies having seen her possibly have for lying? The first mainstream werewolf on screen and, somehow still not quite the definitive movie werewolf, perhaps because the themes which would eventually be considered classic ...are not quite there yet. In this case, we have some of the conflicts between religion/faith and science which appeared in both  Frankenstein  (1931) and the later  Dracula's Daughter  (1936.) There are a few "what Man was not meant to know" type comments and scenes. According to the dialogue both evolution and creation seem to be equally accountable for existing species. A character even has a problem with man-generated, artificial moonlight! The humor is also reminiscent of  Bride , with women and elderly women providing it. Despite an emphasis on science, the scientists present seem to be unaware of the meaning of the suffix 'phobia,' as in the term 'lycantrophobia.' A grey-suited ad man mistaken for a government agent gets framed for murder and is on the run from the law while simultaneously chasing danger and romance across country, (the title is literal as it simply indicates the trip including by Northwest train, though some assume it’s derived from Shakespeare:  "I am but mad north-northwest: when the wind is southerly, I know a hawk from a handsaw." ) Arguably not the greatest Hitchcock, but certainly the crowning jewel of his romantic thrillers: with a star cast including his beloved Cary Grant; sexy, snappy, humorous dialogue; a Bernard Herrmann soundtrack; varied and iconic locations and great color, widescreen photography to go with them; etc. Certainly, one of my priority DVD purchases (in case you are wondering the other two were  The Birds  and  Vertigo .) A has-been tennis player (Ray Milland) hires/blackmails a seedy guy from his own past (Anthony Dawson) into killing his wealthy wife (Grace Kelly) who has of late been thinking about leaving him, and therefore out in the cold. Is there such a thing as a perfect murder? Clearly not, even when plenty of people get away with lots of crimes every day. In this care the imperfection begins when the wrong person is killed. And I should really stop there, except that the movie intends for the criminal not to get away with it, and so he must inevitably take some seemingly meaningless missteps if not for the incredible doggedness of the officer in charge of the investigation even up to a day before the date of the execution of the wrong person. This may seem unrealistic, and so it is. In much of the Hitchcock crime output the criminal nearly almost gets away with it all, but if we are to believe his words the intent is merely to maximize suspense, and not necessarily to meet out screen justice.
