De Ark van Noach - Arkmuseum

Afbeelding

Jij bent veilig in mij. Vanaf vandaag leef jij in mij. Vanaf vandaag leef jij in mij.

The ball

Afbeelding
In the mid-1970s, during an excavation project at Stirling Castle in Scotland, a grey ball was discovered. It was found behind some oak-panelling in a bedroom once used by Mary Queen of Scots during her reign in the 16th century. It has since been declared the world's oldest football!  The ball which looks to be made from a pigs bladder, was re-discovered in 1999 in the archives of Stirling Smith Art Gallery and Museum. Tests confirmed that it was created between 1540-1570, that made the ball 436 years old!  Mary Queen of Scots once refereed a ground-breaking game between a team of Englishmen and a Scottish-French side in 1568. Mary would not have had the freedom to roam outside the castle, so the match would have taken place within its walls.  Mary helped the teams keep their cool, in a match described as "without foul play". The game lasted two hours, but the result was never recorded. It is unknown if the Queen herself, used the ball. The ball is currently...

OLD CROGHAN MAN'S HAND

Afbeelding
OLD CROGHAN MAN'S HAND  .  The Old Croghan Man, is a well-preserved Irish Iron Age bog body found in June 2003. The remains are named after Croghan Hill north of County Offaly near where the body was found.  Based on the man's arm span, it's calculated that he stood between 5 ft 11.5" and 6 ft 6" tall, which is considered to be exceptionally tall for the period when he lived.  The man's apparently manicured nails led to speculation that he was not someone who engaged in manual labour, so was possibly high status. Chemical analysis performed on his nails found that he had consumed meat regularly for at least four months before his death. In Iron Age Ireland, meat was a luxury enjoyed by the elites of society.  Old Croghan Man was buried at a bog, at the foot of an ancient hill that was used for kingship ceremonies. A 2014 documentary suggested that he was a king or prince, who was sacrificed by the druids, possibly due to poor weather or harvests. Th...

Carry the lad that’s born to be King, Over the sea to Skye.” 'Skye Boat Song’ .  One of the most romantic characters in Scottish history, is Flora MacDonald.
