David Hume

Afbeelding
One of the leading figures of the Scottish Enlightenment, David Hume is regarded by many to be the greatest philosopher to write in the English language. An empiricist, who believed that all knowledge derives from experience, Hume’s work continues to be highly influential in Western philosophy today. Interestingly, although he lived to age 65, Hume’s most important and enduring philosophical work was done before he reached age 25. But although it is as a philosopher that Hume earned historical fame, during his lifetime he was best known as an historian. His six-volume history of England, published between 1754 and 1762, was a best seller and remained the standard text for a century. After Hume’s death in August 1776, his friend Adam Smith, the great Scottish economist and philosopher, wrote, “Upon the whole, I have always considered him, both in his lifetime and since his death, as approaching as nearly to the idea of a perfectly wise and virtuous man, as perhaps the nature of human fr

Swaddling

Afbeelding
For thousands of years, humans customarily “swaddled” babies for the first nine months or so of their lives. Swaddling is the practice of wrapping the infant in tightly bound cloths, to prevent the baby from being able to move his/her arms and legs. Historically it was believed that swaddling kept babies from developing physical deformities, and also that it made them easier to tend. But while the practice of swaddling babies was widespread, it was not universal. Scythians and Spartans, for example, did not swaddle their babies, believing that allowing infants to move their arms freely helped them grow into better soldiers. By the 1700’s, in the West significant opposition arose to the practice of swaddling infants, and it eventually fell out of favor. Nowadays swaddling is controversial, with its advocates arguing that swaddling helps comfort infants and with its critics arguing that the practice is dangerous. Whatever the merits of the arguments for and against it, these days swaddli

Harriet Lane Johnston

James Buchanan was a lifelong bachelor, the only president who never married. During his administration, the role of first lady was filled by his ward and orphaned niece, Harriet Lane. Harriet was an intelligent, vivacious, attractive, and charming young woman. While Buchanan is remembered as an unsuccessful president, Harriet Lane was widely admired, and is well-regarded for her time as first lady, having handled her difficult duties during those troubled times with grace and skill. In 1866 Harriet married Henry Johnston, a wealthy Baltimore banker, and they had two sons. Sadly, both children died before reaching adulthood and Henry soon followed them. Harriet outlived her husband by 19 years. On her death she endowed the Harriet Lane Home for Invalid Children, a children’s home/medical facility connected to Johns Hopkins Medical School that served hundreds of thousands of children during its existence. An avid art collector, she donated her extensive collection to the Smithsonian, an

Kiyoshi Tanimoto

In 1945, Kiyoshi Tanimoto was a Methodist pastor serving in Hiroshima, Japan. Tanimoto, who had been educated in the United States, survived the atomic bombing of the city on August 6, 1945. In 1951 he met Shigeko Niimoto, a young woman whose face had been severely disfigured as a result of the blast, when she was 13 years old. Shigeko and other young women like her in Hiroshima were suffering not only from their physical injuries, such as severe facial scarring, fused fingers, and the loss of eyes and noses, but also from the shame and social rejection that accompanied their disfigurement. Moved by their plight, Reverend Tanimoto organized a support group for the women, and began pursuing efforts to help them get the plastic surgery they needed. American journalist and editor Norman Cousins became aware of Tanimoto’s work and offered to help. Because there were no facilities for the necessary surgery in Japan, Cousins and Tanimoto began trying to raise the funds to bring the twenty-fi

Tammany Hall

Afbeelding
Originally founded as a social club, New York City’s Tammany Hall would eventually become one of the most notorious and corrupt political “machines” in American history. New York’s Tammany Society was one of several created across the young republic in the late 18th century. Intended to be a social club, with an emphasis on political discussion, the Societies adopted rituals and nomenclature inspired by Native American culture. Their leaders were called “Sachems,” for example, and their meeting places were called “wigwams.” In New York particularly “Tammany Hall” soon became a source of political power. Aaron Burr used the influence of Tammany Hall to help carry New York for Jefferson’s Democratic-Republicans, thus swinging the election of 1800. Andrew Jackson rewarded Tammany support in 1828 with lucrative Federal jobs, thus initiating the “spoils system.” Although when founded Tammany Hall had proclaimed itself to be for “pure Americans” only, by the 1850s the organization had opened

MASTERS’ WILL

MASTERS’ WILL “Whatever you are going through is happening with your Masters’Will. Go through it with a smile.” Life often throws problems at us to teach us patience, and surrender to His Will. Robert Smalls

Afbeelding
In the spring of 1862, 23-year-old Robert Smalls was working as a pilot in Charleston harbor aboard a Confederate steamer called “the Planter.” The ship’s three officers were white. The other seven crewmen, including Smalls, were slaves. Despite Confederate orders requiring officers to always remain aboard their vessels, the officers on the Planter often went ashore at night to spend the night with their families, leaving only the enslaved crew on the ship. Whether they did so because they trusted Smalls, or doubted his courage and ability, either way they made a big mistake. Smalls recognized the opportunity their negligence presented, and he resolved to act on it. First he had to convince the other crew members. Escaping out of the heavily guarded harbor would be risky and dangerous. But Smalls’ charisma, confidence, and the prospect of liberty overcame whatever fears or doubts they may have had. Smalls set his plan in motion. Next he had to convince his wife Hannah. What will happen

Eugen Steinach

Afbeelding
By the 1920’s Austrian researcher and physiologist Eugen Steinach was world famous; so famous that his name had been turned into a verb. Nominated for the Nobel Prize six times, with his pioneering research in endocrinology Steinach demonstrated the effect of hormones in determining masculine and feminine characteristics in humans. But that is not what made him a household name throughout the world. Nowadays Steinach is sometimes remembered for his claim that male homosexuality could be “cured” by transplanting testicles from a heterosexual man into a homosexual man. It is worth mentioning that as horrifying as that notion sounds to us today, Steinach’s contention that homosexuality was a biological fact (albeit one that was in need of a “cure”) represented a significant advance over the belief that it was merely degeneracy and moral failure. But it wasn’t Steinach’s supposed homosexuality “cure” that made him world famous either. The reason people in households across the world knew S

Glamis Castle

Situated alongside the Village of Glamis and in the Scottish county of Angus there stands a fine and ornate 17th century tower with later extensions, the faƧade is built in a style known as Scottish Baronial and it has a history that goes back a thousand years. The castle is set within its own extensive estates and park land which cover an area of over 57sq km in the Strathmore valley on the southern flank of the Grampian Mountains just to the north of the Sidlaw Hills, the nearest town is Forfar about 10kl to the east and about 15km to the south is the city of Dundee. The district that Glamis stands in was once part of the heartland of the ancient Pictish people during the Early Middle Ages, these ancient people held territory to the east of the Grampian Mountains that stretched from the Orcadian archipelago in the north to the Firth of Forth in the south. These enigmatic people were known as the "Picti" by the Roman invaders who ruled the southern extent of mainland Britain
