Sauchie Tower.

Sauchie Tower. It was Robert the Bruce who first granted the lands of Sauchie to his sheriff of Clackmannan Henri de Annand in 1321, but by 1412 these lands had passed to Sir James Schaw through marriage when he wed Mary de Annand and it was soon afterwards that Sir James began to build the Tower House at Sauchie. The Schaw clan are one of the lowland clans and are not connected to the Highland clan Shaw who are part of the Chattan confederation of clans, they are little known in modern Scottish history but in medieval times the Schaw's were at the top of the country's nobility, in c1460 Sir James’s son James Schaw was made Governor of Stirling Castle and given the title Captain of the Castle by James III. And in 1529 an other member of the Schaw clan was honoured by James V with the title of "Master of the King's Wine Cellar" hence the three wine goblets on the family Coat of Arms. By the early part of the 17th century living in a tower house had become unfashi

Glamis Castle

GLAMIS CASTLE ~ SCOTLAND . Glamis Castle in Angus, Scotland, is the ancestral home of the Earls of Strathmore. From its inception in 1016, the castle has housed royalty. In 1034, when it was just a humble royal hunting lodge, King Malcolm II, was assassinated there. Around 1376 the castle was improved and presented to Sir John Lyon by his father-in-law King Robert II, as part of his daughter’s dowry. More recently it was the childhood home of Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon who married George VI. Their daughter, Princess Margaret was also born there. Nine ghosts are said to make Glamis their eternal home. One is said to be Macbeth, and a Grey Lady haunts the chapel. Earl Beardie plays dice with the Devil and a ghostly madman can be seen walking on the roof along ‘The Mad Earl’s Walk’ on wild winter nights. Lady Janet Douglas, was the wife of the sixth Lord of Glamis, John Lyon. She was accused of practising witchcraft against King John V of Scotland. Through the false testimonies of

Schloss Schonbuhel, Austria

Afbeelding
Schloss Schonbuhel, Austria The castle is built on rock approximately 40 metres (130 ft) above the level of the river Danube. A Roman fortress may have stood there before. The castle was begun in the early 12th century by Marchwardus de Schoenbuchele as a defensive fortress. When his descendant Ulrich von Schonpihel died at the beginning of the 14th century, the family was extinguished. The castle was briefly owned by Conrad von Eisenbeutel, and then by the Abbey of Melk. In 1396 it was sold to the brothers Caspar and Gundaker von Starhemberg. It remained in the Starhemberg family for more than 400 years, but fell into disrepair. In 1819 Prince Ludwig Josef von Starhemberg sold it, together with the castle of Aggstein, to Count Franz von Beroldingen, who had it renovated and partially rebuilt, so that by 1821 it was again habitable. In 1930 the SchƶnbĆ¼hel estate was sold to Count Oswald von Seilern und Aspang. https://pin.it/47ujLNb

A Castle for Christmas (2021)

Afbeelding

Afbeelding
Ɩrebro Castle is a medieval castle fortification at SvartĆ„n in Ɩrebro County, Sweden. It was expanded during the reign of the royal family Vasa (House of Vasa) and finally rebuilt about 1900. Some of the rooms are used as classrooms for pupils from Karolinska gymnasiet. The castle lies on an island in the river SvartĆ„n. The name of Ɩrebro comes from the small stones ("ƶr") that the river transports. The second part of the word comes from the bridge ("bro") . The oldest part of the castle, a defence tower, was erected in the latter half of the 13th century. It was probably built during the reign of King Magnus IV of Sweden (1316–1374). In 1364, Albrecht von Mecklenburg (ca 1340–1412) captured a fortress in Ɩrebro. That was probably a predecessor of today's castle, which was built on the small island within the SvartĆ„ river. The fortress is supposed to have consisted of a defence tower with a surrounding wall. The tower was added to in the 14th century to make a l

ChĆ¢teau de la BrĆØde

Afbeelding
ChĆ¢teau de la BrĆØde, France, was built in the 1306, on the remains of a previous fortification: it was built in the Gothic style, surrounded by a moat filled with water and equipped with a defensive system. Charles-Louis de Secondat, baron of Montesquieu, was born inside the castle on January 18, 1698 and lived there, who wrote a series of works including The Spirit of the Laws. He also made some changes to the structure without alternating the defensive aspect: he created a French garden and an English one and surrounded the fortress of Bordeaux vineyards. It belonged to the Montesquieu family until 2004, when the countess Jacqueline de Chabannes, her last descendant, died: she left the castle as an inheritance to the private foundation that bears her name, namely Fondation Jacqueline de Chabannes. The building has a polygonal plan, with a larger tower on one of the sides; it is accessed through three bridges that have replaced the old drawbridges. In the castle the room of the

ČervenĆ” Lhota Castle

ČervenĆ” Lhota Castle, in the South Bohemian Region, Czech Republic. It lies about 20 kilometres (12 mi) north-west of JindřichÅÆv Hradec. It stands at the middle of a lake on a rocky island. Its picturesque Renaissance building is a destination of thousands of tourists every year. Its name ČervenĆ” Lhota meaning "red lhota" can be explained by the colour of the chĆ¢teau's bright-red roof tiles. There is also a park, where the Chapel of the Holy Trinity is located. The existence of an original fortress on the site of today's chĆ¢teau is assumed from sometime around the middle of the 14th century. It was built on a rocky granite outcrop, which, after the damming of a stream and the filling up of a fishpond, became an island. The first written source is an entry into the land records from 1465, mentioning the division of the property of deceased Ctibor of ZĆ”smuk between his two sons Petr and VĆ”clav. The fortress then might have been sold into the ownership of DiviÅ” BoubĆnskĆ½

The two towers

The two towers: Garisenda and degli Asinelli, Bologna, Italy The two towers are commonly recognized as symbols of Bologna and are located in the heart of the city at the point where the ancient Via Emilia (Aemilian Way) entered the city. They were built during the Middle Ages and had a military function (signalling and defence) as well as representing, with their grandeur, the social prestige of the family that had them built. The Tower degli asinelli was built between 1109 and 1119 by the family bearing the same name and was handed over to the Municipality as early as the following century. 498 internal steps lead to the top at a height of 97.02 metres offering spectacular views of the city. Torre Garisenda, built at the same time as the previous tower, is different due to its shorter height of 47 metres. It is known for its steep overhang due to a subsidence of the land and the foundations, so much so that Dante featured it in Canto XXXI of the Inferno. It was lowered for fear of it

Hohenzollern Castle

Afbeelding
Hohenzollern Castle (German: Burg Hohenzollern) is the ancestral seat of the imperial House of Hohenzollern. The third of three hilltop castles built on the site, it is located atop Mount Hohenzollern, above and south of Hechingen, on the edge of the Swabian Jura of central Baden-WĆ¼rttemberg, Germany. The first castle on the mountain was constructed in the early 11th century. Over the years the House of Hohenzollern split several times, but the castle remained in the Swabian branch, the dynastic seniors of the Franconian-Brandenburgian cadet branch that later acquired its own imperial throne. This castle was completely destroyed in 1423 after a ten-month siege by the free imperial cities of Swabia. The second castle, a larger and sturdier structure, was constructed from 1454 to 1461, and served as a refuge for the Catholic Swabian Hohenzollerns, including during the Thirty Years' War. By the end of the 18th century it was thought to have lost its strategic importance and gradually
