Charmed: Where three sisters—Prue, Piper, and Phoebe—fight demons, save the world, and still find time to bicker over who gets the last slice of pizza. Forget the Power of Three; it’s the Power of Passive-Aggressive Eye Rolls that keeps this show magical!

Notenboom

Afbeelding

South Pacific (1958)

Afbeelding
South Pacific  (1958) Starting with widescreen, Technicolor photography of the Pacific and with breezy Rodgers and Hammerstein music, (some of it familiar outside of the Musical for its use in shampoo commercials or comedic spoofs,) and kooky, funny characters it won’t be immediately obvious where the story is ultimately headed. At the time of production, many returning WWII soldiers must have  already  come home with foreign brides, but I’m sure even more must have had come from the then, still recent, Korean War, and quite a few more would come from not-quite-there-yet Viet Nam; so, despite being a bit too late, it was still relevant to address domestic, American racism traveling abroad and encountering people physically different from what it had seen in its limited socio-geographical provincial setting. The film walks a fine line between featuring near-magical exoticism ( Bali Ha’i ) and some rather extreme Pacific Islander primitive stereotypes, (not that they...

Our neighbor

Our neighbor — a successful business owner — sent his seven-year-old daughter over to play at our house one afternoon. Her parents absolutely adore her, and her mom is always taking care of her, so her life is usually pretty picture-perfect. But that particular day, two things happened at once. First, everyone in our house was busy and overwhelmed. Second, I had decided to make lamb on the grill. And of course, right at the worst possible moment, a giant bag of charcoal split open in the garage. Black dust went everywhere. The floor, the shelves, the boxes — it looked like a small mining operation had exploded in there. Before I could even start cleaning, I had to move half the stuff out of the garage first. So I spread out a tarp and got to work. That’s when the neighbor’s daughter walked up to me very seriously and announced that she had been “assigned to help.” I tried several times to convince her to go play outside instead, but she refused with impressive determination. Howe...

A Farewell to Arms (1932)

Afbeelding
A Farewell to Arms   (1932) Gary Cooper and Helen Hayes are two Americans volunteering for Italy in WWI, meeting, and after an initial bad impression, falling in love, much to the chagrin of a male friend (Adolphe Menjou) who had his own romantic designs on her and who is later instrumental to their concluding tragedy. I don’t want to be unfair to the film, so I’ll merely mention it was most distracting watching this in a spectacularly inferior transfer of the early AMC discs (shame!) that looks as if mastered from a public domain print, (don't be fooled by the photo below!) At one point Coop mentions he’s deserting, and his statement followed by a long battle montage where nothing is clear… Did he desert? Was he convinced by his friend not to? Everything is so dark and fuzzy you have no idea whatsoever what is happening. I suppose the film, though still admittedly old-fashioned, must be infinitely more enjoyable with a nice visual and sound quality. Ironically, the film rec...

Marie Antoinette

Afbeelding
“I was a queen, and you took away my crown; a wife, and you killed my husband; a mother, and you deprived me of my children. My blood alone remains: Take it, but do not make me suffer long.” . These words are reported to have been said by Marie Antoinette, after the prosecutor read his indictment. But little did the fallen queen know then, that she would spend two-and-a-half months before her trial and execution, in a noisy, mouldy dungeon, that reeked of pipe smoke, rat urine, and poor sanitation. On the 2nd August 1793, Marie Antoinette arrived at the Conciergerie in the Temple Prison, Paris, at 03.00am. She was torn from the arms of her daughter, Marie-ThĆ©rĆØse, and her sister-in-law, Madame Ɖlisabeth. Her husband King Louis XVI, had been executed earlier in the year. Her youngest son Louis Charles, had been taken from her a month earlier. Marie Antoinette was quickly escorted to a cell below the level of the prison courtyard. The brick-tiled floor was covered with muddy slime, a...

10 Things Mothers Rarely Tell You

10 Things Mothers Rarely Tell You Most moms will never say these things out loud, but they are worth thinking about — and worth remembering. 1. You made her cry… many times. She cried when she found out she was pregnant. She cried when she gave birth to you. She cried the first time she held you in her arms. She cried from happiness, fear, worry, and overwhelming love. Your pain became her pain. Your joy became her joy — whether you realized it or not. 2. She wanted that last piece of cake too. But then she saw the way you were looking at it, licking your lips and hoping for one more bite… and she gave it to you instead. Because your happiness mattered more to her than her own. 3. It hurt. When you pulled her hair, it hurt. When your tiny nails scratched her skin, it hurt. When you bit her while nursing, it hurt badly. You kicked her ribs before you were even born. You stretched her body for nine long months. And bringing you into the world caused a kind of pain impossible to ful...

Shannen Doherty

Afbeelding
Shannen Doherty was born on April 12, 1971, in Memphis, Tennessee, to Rosa and Tom Doherty. Moving to Los Angeles at age seven, she began her acting career early, landing her first major role at 11 as Jenny Wilder on Little House on the Prairie. Her breakthrough came in 1990 when she starred as Brenda Walsh in Beverly Hills, 90210, a role that catapulted her to fame but also sparked controversy due to reported on-set tensions. Despite her "bad girl" reputation, Doherty’s talent shone through, establishing her as a prominent figure in ‘90s television  .

Love Me Tender (1956)

Afbeelding
Love Me Tender   (1956) I always disliked this film because (SPOILER)  “it’s the one where Elvis dies.”  And while my kid kept pressuring us old fogeys to watch Baz Luhrmann‘s biopic I kept insisting,  “If I wanted to watch an Elvis film, I’d just watch an Elvis film,”  which I admit is a bit unfair since John Carpenter’s TV movie was pretty good and because  most  Elvis movies are pretty bad. There are few exceptions which are undeniably worth watching, Elvis’ debut being arguably one of them: a Western set at the precise moment the end of the Civil War is announced when a group of Confederate rebels robs a train carrying the Union payroll and when hearing the news figure they are better off calling it the spoils of war rather than the crime it now technically is, while the federal government figures things a bit differently. They split the loot between them, and all go their own way. A trio of brothers go back their farm to find not only their...
