I still hear it
I still hear it. Her last breath.
It follows me into the quiet—into the shower, into restless sleep, into the spaces where silence should have been my comfort. At first, it felt unbearable. Like I had failed her in the moment that mattered most. I replayed it over and over, convinced I should have done something differently. The weight of that sound was crushing, filling me with guilt I couldn’t escape.
But grief has its own language, and slowly, I began to understand. That last breath wasn’t pain—it was surrender. It wasn’t abandonment—it was release. It was her saying, “It’s okay now. You don’t have to carry this for me anymore.”
The sound I thought would haunt me forever softened. The echo of loss became the whisper of peace. And in that whisper, I began to feel something I thought I’d lost—love. Pure, steady, eternal love.
If you are haunted by those final moments too, please remember this: the pain you carry is not proof that you failed them. It’s proof that you loved them so deeply, their absence carved a silence you can still hear.
Love that deep doesn’t end with a last breath. It lingers. It waits. And someday, it will greet you again.
