Made On Broadway

"Made On Broadway" 1933 directed by Harry Beaumont and written by Courtney Terrett and Lucien Hubbard for MGM Robert Montgomery, Sally Eilers, Madge Evans, Eugene Pallette, C. Henry Gordon, Jean Parker, Ivan Lebedeff, Joseph Cawthorn, Claire Du Brey, Don Brodie, Bess Flowers.

An unsung little gem of a film with Robert Montgomery displaying his comic gifts in a role which is a bit Cary Grant and a bit Lee Tracy in style. Montgomery was unique in urban settings, and he was pretty spiffy in top hat and tails. Sally Eilers is excellent in a role which I can only imagine Isabel Jewell doing but Eilers is awfully good as a real opportunist whom Montgomery is never able to turn into a real lady. Madge Evans is fine considering what little she has to do. There are some really good players in small roles and the ending is quickly tagged on as is often the case with such programmers. There are elements of both "Pygmalion" and "Chicago" here, but the selling points are the performances by Montgomery and Eilers.
