James Whale
James Whale, July 22, 1889, Dudley, Worcestershire, UK - May 29, 1957, Hollywood, Los Angeles, CA, USA. His finest work is from the Pre-Code era with "Journey's End" 1929, "Hell's Angels" 1930, "Waterloo Bridge" 1931, "Frankenstein" 1931, "The Impatient Maiden" 1932, "The Dark Old House" 1932, "The Kiss Before the Mirror" 1933, "The Invisible Man" 1933, "By Candlelight" 1933 and then he had to fight with the Breen Office to get "One More River" passed in 1934 with the Code causing problems. While he made twelve feature films after the Code, I am only familiar with "One More River", "The Bride of Frankenstein", "Show Boat", and "The Great Garrick". It seems his earlier work is held in higher regard.
