As You Like It

William Shakespeare's "As You Like It" 1936 directed by Paul Czinner and adapted by J.M. Barrie, Robert Cullen, and Carl Mayer for Inter-Allied.

Elisabeth Bergner, Laurence Olivier, Sophie Stewart, Herbert Ainley, Leon Quartermaine, Felix Aylmer
Originally released in 1936, this 1949 lobby card puts Olivier above the title with his royal prefix and places Bergner below it. Originally, it was the other way around. She and director husband had performed the play onstage and adapted it to film with Olivier in his first Shakespearean screen performance. While Warner Brothers' "A Midsummer Night's Dream" 1935 and MGM's "Romeo and Juliet" are often mentioned, this film is overlooked even though it is a charming adaptation with fine performances. Some critics found it too much like a filmed play lacking cinematic nuances, but Bergner is enchanting, and she outshines Olivier.
