Siblings John Barrymore as “Prince Chegodieff”, Ethel Barrymore as “Czarina Alexandra”, Lionel Barrymore as “Gregori Rasputin”, and also child actor Tad Alexander as “Czarevitch Alexis ‘Alyosha’”, in Richard Boleslawski’s Pre-Code historical drama for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer ‘Rasputin and the Empress’ (1932), also starring British actress Diana Wynyard, Ralph Morgan, Edward Arnold, and Anne Shirley. This was one of only two movies that all three Barrymore siblings appeared in together, the other being Christy Cabanne’s all-star revue silent movie ‘The National Red Cross Pageant’ (1917), now a lost film, that was made to promote war bonds for WWI. Ethel Barrymore has been regarded by many to be “The First Lady of the American Theatre” (an honour also often bestowed upon Helen Hayes), and Ethel Barrymore appeared in movies between 1914 and 1957. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her performance as “Ma Mott”, with co-star Cary Grant playing her young Cockney drifter son “Ernie Mott” in Clifford Odett’s movie adaptation of Richard Llewellyn’s 1943 novel ‘None But The Lonely Heart’ (1944), for RKO Radio Pictures, and also starring Irish actor Barry Fitzgerald, Jane Wyatt, British actress June Duprez, George Coulouris, and Dan Duryea. Remembering Ethel Barrymore (15th August, 1979 - 18th June, 1959) on the anniversary of her passing.
