Peter Cooper

Today is the birthday of Peter Cooper, whose accomplishments included, among many other things, designing and building the first American steam locomotive and inventing Jello. A dedicated philanthropist, Cooper founded the Cooper Union, a private college in New York where, until recently, all students were given full scholarships.
In 1876, at age 85, Cooper received the Greenback Party’s nomination for President, making him the oldest presidential candidate in American history.
And he had an awesome beard.
Peter Cooper was born on February 12, 1791.
