A Night to Remember (1942)

This Comedy Murder Mystery is another film attempting to fit in that Screwball Comedy collection and not really convincing anyone.
A Mystery writer (Brian Aherne) and his wife (Loretta Young) move into a basement apartment in Greenwich Village where all the other tenants seem to be involved in some sort of conspiracy (though it’s obvious from the start they are being blackmailed.)
So far so good but when the body of a nude man is found in their terrace after spending their first night whatever secrecy they wanted to maintain is obviously no longer an option.
Being a writer, he also fancies himself an amateur sleuth and is sometimes (but not always) one step ahead of the police.
The physical setting is quite reminiscent of My Sister Eileen (1942), but the comedic sensibility on display was more like that of Abbott and Costello Meet the Killer, Boris Karloff (1949, down to a gag involving a turtle and a candle, which I identified as such as soon as I saw the candle moving; except this one did it first!) but where the Abbott and Costello film is actually suspenseful this one is not.
Their flirting with strangers has more effect on them than finding a corpse in their apartment and having a killer in their building or even having cops investigating the crime (he is having a blast, apparently); but I did like the gruesome touch of the wife taking a bath in the same bathtub used to drown someone some moments before and her reaction upon putting two and two together.
It’s quite funny, has some nice attempts at atmosphere (the electricity is out more than once); but it is neither very suspenseful nor does the identity of the killer have any bearing on anything; (any of the other characters could have been revealed as the killer and it would not have made any difference whatsoever); and doesn’t quite fit my idea of a Screwball Comedy.
Also with Jeff Donnell, William Wright, Sidney Toler, Gale Sondergaard & Donald MacBride.
