The Mississippi

March 25, 1983, The Mississippi premiered. This legal drama ran for two seasons, concluding on March 5, 1984, with a total of 24 episodes: a pilot, six first-season episodes, and 17 second-season episodes.

Created by Aubrey Solomon, the series starred Ralph Waite, Linda Miller, and Stan Shaw. Ralph Waite portrayed Ben Walker, a successful criminal attorney who, after retiring from his law practice, sought a simpler life as the captain of a stern-wheel riverboat on the Mississippi River. Despite his hopes for a quiet retirement, Walker frequently encountered people at various ports who needed legal help, drawing him back into criminal defense.

Walker’s supporting “crew” included Stella McMullen and Lafayette “Lafe” Tate, both of whom were more invested in helping others, fighting crime, and pursuing their own legal careers than managing the tugboat.

The show was filmed on location along the Mississippi River, with key scenes shot in cities including Natchez, Mississippi, and Memphis, Tennessee, giving the series an authentic riverboat atmosphere.
