ANCHORS AWEIGH

 "ANCHORS AWEIGH" (1945)

MY THOUGHTS ... This is the second appearance, for a Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra musical, in the "31 Days of Oscar" schedule. Out of the three films that they made together, this would rank #3 for me, although I do enjoy it a great deal! The storyline is very clever, and the song & dance scenes are excellent ... most especially the "fantasy scene," during which, Gene Kelly dances with Jerry the Mouse (of "Tom & Jerry" fame)! It is a lot of fun to watch and listen to. It is totally worth the watch!
SYNOPSIS: A pair of sailors on leave try to help a movie extra become a singing star.
STARRING: Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra, Kathryn Grayson, Dean Stockwell, Jose Iturbi, Pamela Britton and Sharon McManus.
SCREENPLAY BY: Isobel Lennart and based on a story written by Natalie Marcin.
DIRECTED BY: George Sidney
ACADEMY AWARDS: Nominated for 5 Academy Awards and won 1 for "Best Music - Scoring of a Motion Picture" (George Stoll).*
* On 10 September 2001 Kevin Spacey purchased Stoll's Oscar statuette, at a Butterfields auction in Los Angeles, and returned it to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
