The Quitter

"The Quitter" 1934 directed by Richard Thorpe and written by Robert Ellis for Chesterfield Pictures
Emma Dunn, Charley Grapewin, William Bakewell, Barbara Weeks, Hale Hamilton, Glen Boles, Mary Kornman, Lafe Mckee, Aggie Herring, Edmund Burns, Jane Keckley, Edward LeSaint.

Presumed dead in France by the war's end, Charley Grapewin reappears in his family's life during a most crucial time as his sons take on adulthood in opposing ways. The cast is very good with solid performances by all, especially Emma Dunn who portrayed so many loving mothers in films. I couldn't resist thinking how this might have done well in Frank Capra's hands, but Richard Thorpe brought it in under budget.
