The Last Command
"The Last Command" 1928 directed by Josef von Sternberg and written by Lajos Biro, John F. Goodrich, and Ernst Lubitsch for Paramount Studios.
Emil Jannings, Evelyn Brent, William Powell, Jack Raymond, Nicholas Soussanin, Michael Visaroff, Fritz Field, Henry Courding.
Emil Jannings was the first actor to win the Oscar for Best Actor. He won for "The Way of All Flesh", a Lost Film, and this one, "The Last Command" which survives in a beautiful print from the Criterion Collection. Evelyn Brent is a powerful presence in the film and for what he has to do in his role, William Powell is wonderful. I have seen Jannings in "The Eyes of the Mummy" 1918, "Madame Du Barry" 1919, "The Last Laugh" 1924, "Variety" 1925, "Tartuffe" 1925, "Faust" 1926, and in "The Blue Angel" 1930, and he was a very great actor regardless of his political affiliations. Josef von Sternberg did a magnificent job directing this original work.
