Merle Oberon

Merle Oberon. The first Asian American to be nominated for a best actress Oscar, but she kept her mixed-race heritage a secret until her death. I’m glad times have changed…it’s sad that she faced shame and discrimination.

The Hays Code frowned upon interracial romance which made casting essentially illegal. If her mixed race was known at the time, it would be highly unlikely she would’ve had a career…
Merle was born in Bombay, India. Her father was white and her mother is said to have been possibly Sri Lankan and Maori. Due to her light skin tone, she was able to pass as white and went on to have a long, successful career as an actress.
Merle went to great lengths to keep her heritage a secret. She used bleach cream to lighten her complexion and her grandmother who raised her was referred to as her maid. After her death, the truth came out. It’s too bad that she never got the satisfaction of honoring her heritage while alive. Her heritage should have celebrated but instead it was hidden…
