Massachusetts

This house stands at the corner of Maple and Union Streets in Springfield, Massachusetts, and it is shown here in the late 1930s and 2017. It was built in 1841 as the home of Solyman Merrick, a tool manufacturer and inventor of the monkey wrench. He lived here until 1847, when he sold the house to Ansel Phelps, a lawyer who served as mayor from 1856 to 1858.
More recently, this house was vacant for many years and was badly deteriorated. It had extensive water damage on the interior, and the exterior porches and columns were collapsing. However, it was restored in 2016, and the interior is now used for offices.
