Chaffees

This house on Palisado Avenue in Windsor, Connecticut was built around 1765, and it is shown here in 1937 and 2017. It was originally the home of Hezekiah and Lydia Chaffee, who lived here with their five children and several enslaved people. In 1774, the Chaffees hosted John Adams, who stayed here on November 4 during his return trip home from the First Continental Congress.
The house remained in the family until the early 20th century, when it became a part of the Chaffee School, a girls' school that later merged with the Loomis Institute to form the present-day Loomis Chaffee School. The house is now owned by the Windsor Historical Society, and it stands as one of the finest examples of Georgian architecture in Windsor.
