" Tracy Borman , " The private lives of the Tudors "
If Henry was not to share Anne’s bed , he, at least, was determined to at least enjoy the sight of her in a nighttime attire .
He therefore commissioned Holbein to sketch Anne wearing it.
In the portait, Anne is shown wearing a typical high collared embroidered linen smock underneath the nightgown.
On her head was a linen coif, wrapped around with a frontlet.
Intimate, it may be, but it is certainly not the most flattering portait of Henry’s great love .
She has a pronounced double chin and looks plain. Such is the contrast with the more famous portait of Henry’s dark-haired beauty that some even doubt it is her, despite the contemporary description.
