Anne Boleyn
Anne Boleyn used jewellery to project the image of an independent woman who was the epitome of fashion, and this image has endured for centuries. Of all her pieces, the most famous is her B pendant. Despite her reputation for sophistication and setting trends, it was not Anne who started this trend; jewellery with initials went back a few generations before Anne. Margaret of Austria was fond of initial jewels, and given Anne spent some time at her court, it is possible she was exposed to the fashion there. Aside from her B pendant, Anne also owned an AB and an A; some believe it is the same A pendant Elizabeth I is wearing in the Whitehall Portrait. Anne also had a ring that displayed her motto, "Most Happy." With these pieces, Anne not only celebrated her family name but also her independence. Two of Anne’s successors, Catherine Howard and Catherine Parr, would also wear pieces of initial jewellery. Initial jewellery is still popular today, and while the trend didn’t start with Anne, but for history lovers her portrait is the most recognisable.
