SOUTH PACIFIC

 "SOUTH PACIFIC" --- (1958) ---

MY THOUGHTS: This is a wonderful musical that they turned into a great movie! So much of its messaging, and specific issues in the lives of its characters, are still quite relevant today. The matter of race most especially. One of the songs from the show: "You've Got to Be Taught" is almost eerie in its truth and foreshadowing. Everyone should know that song, or at minimum listened to it and its incredible lyrics, at least once. We are all "carefully taught," to "hate the people our relatives hate," from childhood on. That theme is very strong in this film. It is also filled with humor, passion, marvelous musical numbers and wartime tragedies. A true classic from Rogers & Hammerstein and more than worth the watch!
SYNOPSIS: "Nurse Nellie Forbush of the U.S. Navy falls for middle-aged French plantation owner Emile De Becque, but recoils upon discovering that he's fathered two mixed-race children. When Nellie leaves him, the heartbroken Emile agrees to take on a dangerous espionage mission. In his absence, Nellie struggles to reconcile her prejudices with her love for him -- and after she spends time with his children and comes to care for them, fears that Emile may not return alive."
