Elizabeth Montgomery and Dick York
Elizabeth Montgomery and Dick York, who played Samantha and Darrin Stephens in the first five seasons of *Bewitched* (1964–1969), shared a close and respectful working relationship both on and off screen. Their chemistry was a cornerstone of the show’s early success, blending romantic warmth with comedic timing that made the magical-mortal marriage feel genuine. However, behind the scenes, York struggled with severe chronic back pain stemming from an injury he’d sustained years earlier while filming the 1959 movie *They Came to Cordura*. The pain led to dependence on prescription medication and, eventually, to significant health complications. By the late 1960s, his condition had worsened to the point where he was often unable to work. Production schedules were frequently disrupted, and there were episodes where York’s scenes were minimized or rewritten to accommodate his absences.
Despite the mounting challenges, Montgomery remained supportive of York, advocating for him when possible and expressing concern for his well-being. She later described him as a brilliant actor and a kind man, deeply affected by his suffering. Nevertheless, the show’s producers ultimately made the difficult decision to recast the role of Darrin in 1969. Dick Sargent took over for the final three seasons, bringing a different but equally endearing energy to the character.
York left the series with regret but understanding, and though his health continued to decline in the years that followed, he always spoke fondly of his time on *Bewitched* and of Montgomery in particular. Their professional bond, forged under both laughter and hardship, remained marked by mutual admiration—a testament to their shared commitment to the show and to each other as colleagues.
