The Little House
The Little House on the Prairie books are a series of American children’s stories written by Laura Ingalls Wilder (whose full name was Laura Elizabeth Ingalls). The stories are based on her own childhood and teenage years growing up in the Midwest—places like Wisconsin, Kansas, Minnesota, South Dakota, and Missouri—between 1870 and 1894.
Laura wrote eight of the books herself, and they were published in the 1930s and 1940s while she was still alive. The words “Little House” appear in the titles of the first and third books, and the third book is called Little House on the Prairie. The second book is about her husband’s childhood.
A ninth book was found and published after Laura died, in 1971. It is now usually included in the series. A tenth book, On the Way Home, is a true story taken from Laura’s diary. It tells about the time after 1894, when she and her husband moved with their daughter to Missouri. This book was also published after her death, in 1962, and includes notes written by her daughter, Rose.
The Little House books have been turned into plays, TV shows, and even an anime. The most famous version is the TV series Little House on the Prairie, which aired from 1974 to 1983. There are also cookbooks and many other items inspired by the books.
