The 19th Academy Awards
The 19th Academy Awards were held on March 13, 1947, honoring the films of 1946, hosted by Jack Benny.
The Best Years of Our Lives won seven of its eight nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, and both male acting Oscars. The Academy awarded Harold Russell—a World War II veteran who had lost both hands in the war—an Honorary Academy Award for "bringing hope and courage to his fellow veterans" for his role as Homer Parrish, believing that, as a non-actor, he would not win the Best Supporting Actor award for which he was nominated. Russell also won the competitive award, making him the only person in Academy history to receive two Oscars for the same performance.
Samuel Goldwyn's "The Best Years of our Lives" won the Best Picture award over Laurence Olivier's "Henry V", Frank Capra's "It's a Wonderful Life", Darryl F. Zanuck's "The Razor's Edge", and Sidney Franklin's "The Yearling" The winner for Best Director was William Wyler for "The Best Years of Our Lives" which was in competition with David Lean "Brief Encounter", Frank Capra "It's a Wonderful Life", Robert Siodmak "The Killers", and Clarence Brown "The Yearling".
Fredric March won his second-Best Actor Oscar for "The Best Years of Our Lives" winning over Laurence Oliver "Henry V", Larry Parks "The Jolson Story", Gregory Peck "The Yearling", and James Stewart "It's a Wonderful Life".
Olivia De Havilland won Best Actress for her performance in "To Each His Own" over Celia Johnson "Brief Encounter", Jennifer Jones "Duel in the Sun", Rosalind Russell "Sister Kenny", and Jane Wyman "The Yearling".
Harold Russell, a non-actor, won Best Supporting Actor for his performance in "The Best Years of Our Lives" in a race with Charles Coburn "The Green Years", William Demarest "The Jolson Story", Claude Rains "Notorious", and Clifton Webb "The Razor's Edge".
Anne Baxter won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her performance in "The Razor's Edge" across from Ethel Barrymore "The Spiral Staircase", Lillian Gish "Duel in the Sun", Flora Robson "Saratoga Trunk", and Gale Sondergaard "Anna and the King of Siam".
