The 17th Academy Awards


The 17th Academy Awards were held on March 15, 1945, at Grauman's Chinese Theater to honor films released in 1944. Bob Hope hosted the 70-minute show which was broadcast on radio nationally.
The five nominated films were "Wilson", "Since You Went Away", "Gaslight", "Double Indemnity" with "Going My Way" winning, Leo McCarey producer. Leo McCarey also won for Best Director for "Going My Way" with Alfred Hitchcock "Lifeboat", Otto Preminger "Laura", Billy Wilder "Double Indemnity", and Henry King "Wilson also running.
Bing Crosby won the Best Actor statue for "Going My Way" and he was running with Barry Fitzgerald "Going My Way" (who was nominated in actor and in supporting categories!), Charles Boyer "Gaslight", Cary Grant "None But the Lonely Heart", and Alexander Knox "Wilson.
Ingrid Bergman won Best Actress for her performance in "Gaslight" running with Claudette Colbert "Since You Went Away", Bette Davis "Mr. Skeffington", Greer Garson "Mrs. Parkington", Barbara Stanwyck "Double Indemnity".
Barry Fitzgerald, who was nominated in two categories for the same role, won in the Best Supporting Actor category for "Going My Way" while joined in the race with Hume Cronyn "The Seventh Cross", Claude Rains "Mr. Skeffington", Clifton Webb "Laura", and Monty Woolley "Since You Went Away".
Ethel Barrymore won Best Supporting Actress for "None But the Lonely Heart". while other contenders were Jennifer Jones "Since You Went Away", Angela Lansbury "Gaslight", Aline MacMahon "Dragon Seed", and Agnes Moorehead "Mrs. Parkington".
