Through the Back Door

"Through the Back Door" 1921 directed by Jack Pickford and Alfred E. Green, written by Gerald C. Duffy and Marian Fairfax.
Mary Pickford, Gertrude Astor, Wilfred Lucas, Helen Raymond, C. Norman Hammond, Elinor Fair, Adolphe Menjou, Peaches Jackson, Doreen Turner, John Harron.
Pickford was amazing playing children which she reportedly enjoyed because she was supporting her mother and siblings by age seven. Portraying children, as she does here as the Belgian girl, Jeanne, gave her a chance to act out the childhood she did not have. She was 29 when this was made, and there are sequences, such as where she cleans the floor by wearing the brushes on her feet, proving she was an adept comedienne, as brilliant as Chaplin doing physical comedy. On the whole, the film is dated by sentimental melodrama about motherhood, but it is worthwhile seeing Mary Pickford in one of her children/young women roles.
