The Taming of the Shrew
"The Taming of the Shrew" 1929 directed by Sam Taylor, written by William Shakespeare (there is not any additional dialogue mentioned in the credits so, that is a myth). United Artists.
Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, Edwin Maxwell, Joseph Cawthorn, Clyde Cook, Geoffrey Wardwell, Dorothy Jordan, Frankie Genardi, Charles Stevens.
The only circulating print is a 1966 one with seven minutes cut by permission of Pickford herself. The original 1929 print is locked away by the Mary Pickford Company. Great liberties were taken to show the two stars in a comic romp with much of Shakespeare's text left out of the film. This was the only film with the two stars together and it was not the box office flop many erroneously claim that it was. That myth as well as the claim that credits read, "By William Shakespeare with additional dialogue by Sam Taylor" are completely unfounded. This was the first sound Shakespeare film adaptation. It was Pickford's second talkie and Fairbanks' first. This is not recommended for Shakespearean purists as much as it is for fans of the two stars who are in fine form.
