RHETT & SCARLETT BETWEEN TAKES

 RHETT & SCARLETT BETWEEN TAKES

What a wonderful behind-the-scenes photograph of Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh relaxing in costume during the filming of Gone With the Wind.

If these outfits look familiar, they should! ❤️

They are the costumes Rhett and Scarlett wear during the Peachtree Street sequence when they stroll through Atlanta with little Bonnie Blue in her baby carriage. The scene was filmed on June 21, 1939, with Victor Fleming directing.

By this point, Rhett is completely devoted to Bonnie—and for his daughter’s sake, he’s even trying to win over the respectable ladies of Atlanta who had once wanted very little to do with him.

And here’s a great little behind-the-scenes detail: during filming, a gust of wind nearly blew Vivien Leigh’s hat away. Vivien caught it and simply continued the scene. Selznick considered doing another take but reportedly liked how naturally she handled the mishap.

I love photographs like this because for a moment we aren’t looking at Rhett and Scarlett—we’re seeing Clark and Vivien sitting quietly on the set between the work of making movie history. ❤️

Do you remember the Peachtree Street scene with Bonnie’s little carriage?
