The castle of Tures
The castle of Tures (Burg Taufers in German) is a medieval castle which rises near Campo Tures, in the Val di Tures, a perpendicular of the Val Pusteria.
The castle stands on a promontory which forms a natural lock, called Klapf, which geographically gives the beginning of the Valle Aurina, while the locality Drittelsand, located north of the castle, still belongs to the municipality of Campo Tures.
History
After a period of decline, the castle was restored after the Second World War by the Benedictine abbot Hieronymus Gassner, a native of Ybbsitz in Lower Austria. Since 1977 the Castle has been purchased by the SĆ¼dtiroler Burgeninstitut ("South Tyrolean Castle Maintenance Institute"). Today it is one of the most interesting medieval castles in the autonomous province of Bolzano. In all there are 64 rooms, 24 of which are made entirely of wood. In the chapel are frescoes from the school of Michael Pacher. Also interesting are the armoury, the library, the room of the princes (the FĆ¼rstenzimmer) and the hearing room. In the basement is the prison. The castle can be visited on set days and hosts exhibitions and concerts from time to time.
Margarethe von Taufers
According to legend, the young Countess Margarethe von Taufers was promised in marriage to a scion of high lineage, but fell in love with the captain of the castle guards and decided to marry him. The family was against that marriage and her father hired a hit man who killed the groom, perhaps near the altar. The countess lived in despair for seven years, until she threw herself out of the window and died.
Legend has it that her spirit was seen still hovering in the castle rooms. In recent times the legend of her has been readapted in concert form and set to music using music (which, however, does not deal directly with the facts) by the nobleman, troubadour and courtly poet Oswald von Wolkenstein. The representation was staged in Moniga del Garda, in Bologna and in Bergamo.
In the media
In the castle of Tures in 1972 the film The most beautiful evening of my life was shot , by Ettore Scola and with Alberto Sordi , based on the story La panne. A Still Possible Story by Friedrich DĆ¼rrenmatt. The detail of the ghost was remembered by Sordi during the shooting of the film.
The castle is also one of the settings of the Italian television series Wings of Life directed by Stefano Reali, starring Virna Lisi and Sabrina Ferilli.
