Stage actress who periodically appeared in TV dramas and films including Joseph Strick's adaptation of James Joyce's "Ulysses." 1967, Peter Hall's 1968 film of "A Midsummer Night's Dream", Michael Anderson's adaptation of the Morris L. West novel "The Shoes of the Fisherman", she portrayed the Countess Herritzon in the Hammer Horror "Lust for a Vampire, portrayed Magda Goebbels in Ennio De Concini's "Hitler: The Last Ten Days", she was Walter's mother in the TV film "Walter" with Ian McKellen in 1982 and was Ms. Wyckham with Eileen Atkin in Maurice Hatton's "Nelly's Version". Jefford was among the faces in Federico Fellini's "And the Ship Sails On" in 1983; she was Lady Mary in Channel 4's biting satire on Cambridge life in "Porterhouse Blue" and Mrs. Shannon in "Campion: Look to the Lady" for the BBC. Director Jerry Schatzberg chose her for Frau Strauss for his 1989 film "Reunion with Christien Anholt and Samuel West as well as Jason Robards. She was Auntie Mildred in "When the Whales Came" starring Paul Scofield, Jack Threlfall, and Helen Mirren. She was Mrs. Herriton in Charles Sturridge's adaptation of E.M. Forster's first novel, "Where Angels Fear to Tread" with Helena Bonham Carter, Rupert Graves, Judy Davis, and Helen Mirren. She was Lady Lydia Eliot in the first twelve episodes of "The House of Eliot". In 1999, she worked with Johnny Depp in Polanski's "The Ninth Gate". A scene in the TV adaptation of "Madame Bovary" happened in 2000 and there were two episodes of "Midsomer Murders' as well as a role as Collyer's mother in "The Deep Blue Sea". Stephen Frears enticed her out of retirement insisting she play the role of the nasty Sister Hildegard in "Philomena".
