Reese Witherspoon

"I do think things were meant to happen. I'm just this little girl from Tennessee, and here I am today. I think a lot of things are just out of your hands."

Columbia Pictures wanted Katie Holmes to play Annette Hargrove in "Cruel Intentions" (1999), but writer and director Roger Kumble didn't think she had enough strength of character for the role. Ryan Phillippe was already signed on as Sebastian Valmont when Kumble asked about his girlfriend, Reese Witherspoon. "So, basically, we took Reese out to dinner to get her drunk, and we ended up getting drunk," Kumble revealed in 2014. "And I literally got down on my knees and begged her: 'Please, it'll be fifteen days, you'll be great.'" Witherspoon agreed.
Phillippe recalled that after filming a fight scene with Witherspoon where the two of them viciously insult each other, he felt so emotionally drained that he went outside and threw up.
According to costume designer Denise Wingate, Witherspoon was deliberately clothed in light colors in order to contrast with the dark colors of Phillippe.
Kumble was inspired by "Welcome to the Dollhouse" (1995). He felt he had never seen anything like it, "so dark," "f**ked up high school." It quickly led him to the thought of doing a new adaptation of "Les Liaisons Dangereuses," but set in high school.
"I was thinking about why I make movies, and I know why. Life is hard. It's nice to go escape and have a good time at the movies. If I can give people a movie about hope, love and the future, then I've done my job."
