10 Things I Hate About You

"10 Things I Hate About You" is a late-90s teen rom-com classic that brings Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew to modern high school life with humor, heart, and a bit of attitude. Set in a sunny, suburban Seattle high school, the film follows the Stratford sisters: the charming and popular Bianca (Larisa Oleynik) and her fiercely independent, quick-witted older sister Kat (Julia Stiles). Their overprotective father forbids Bianca from dating until Kat has a boyfriend—a nearly impossible feat, given Kat’s reputation as the school’s most rebellious and unsociable girl.

The film takes off when Cameron (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a new student and sweet-natured underdog with a crush on Bianca, concocts a scheme to get bad boy Patrick Verona (Heath Ledger) to date Kat. Ledger brings unexpected warmth to Patrick, and Stiles delivers a standout performance as the fiercely independent, misunderstood Kat. Their chemistry is electric, and the scenes between them are a highlight, particularly the famous "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" serenade.
"10 Things" is more than a lighthearted teen comedy—it subtly critiques high school stereotypes and social expectations, especially around femininity and individuality. Kat's character is refreshingly unapologetic and driven, defying the traditional rom-com mold. Her journey toward self-expression and trust is both touching and relatable, making her a standout female lead for the genre.
The film’s sharp, witty script, strong performances, and memorable soundtrack capture the late '90s youth culture with charm and authenticity. This movie is a beloved staple of the era, deftly balancing humor and heart while delivering a thoughtful take on teenage love and rebellion.
