*He claimed to be born on the Russian island Sakhalin. In reality, he was born in the city of Vladivostok, on the Russian mainland. Today a statue of Brynner stands outside his birthplace.
*Teenage Yul Brynner played his guitar in Russian nightclubs in Paris, and he trained and performed as a trapeze acrobat. When a back injury ended his trapeze career, Brynner turned to acting as a profession.
*He was an accomplished photographer. He took many photos on the sets of the various projects he worked on over the years.
*The lead role in "The King and I" became the definitive moment in Yul Brynner's career.By the time of his death, Yul Brynner had performed in "The King and I" 4,625 times on stage. He appeared in the original 1951 Broadway production and won a Tony Award. In 1956, he played the part in the film version and earned an Academy Award. Brynner returned to Broadway in "The King and I" in 1977 and again in 1985 when he won another Tony Award.
*Back in the 1950s men who suffered from male pattern baldness did just that: suffered. Brynner’s shaved head in The King and I let America know that bald was beautiful. It also became Brynner’s trademark look.
*The Ten Commandments (1956) was his favorite movie.Yul Brynner was proud of his performance, and very proud of being in the film. He regarded it as the biggest film ever made, forever.The most financially successful Biblical movie.
*Yul Brynner had a major say in casting decisions, including the decision to cast Steve McQueen in The Magnificent Seven (1960) movie. He specifically requested that McQueen be cast as Vin Tanner. Brynner later regretted the move since he and McQueen developed a disastrous relationship on set.In 1980, Yul Brynner and Steve McQueen reconciled. McQueen, dying of cancer, called Brynner to thank him. "What for?" queried Brynner. "You coulda had me kicked off the movie when I rattled you," replied McQueen, "but you let me stay and that picture made me, so thanks". Brynner told him, "I am the king and you are the rebel prince: every bit as royal . . . and dangerous to cross." McQueen said, "I had to make it up with Yul 'cause without him I wouldn't have been in that picture."
