Trivia of William Holden
*Turning point in his career came in 1950, when he was cast in two major roles: Born Yesterday and Sunset Boulevard (1950).These films helped him transition from likable leading man roles to more substantial, cynical parts.
*He got role as Joe Gillis on Sunset Boulevard (1950) after Montgomery Clift broke his contract just two weeks prior to the start of shooting.
*He was a favorite actor of First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy but disappointed her immensely when she discovered he was a Republican.
*A big supporter of wildlife conservation, he co-founded the Mount Kenya Safari Club in 1959.
*Never forget someone kindness. In his early career, William Holden was considered not to be up to the role in the Golden Boy (1939) by the studio; however, Barbara Stanwyck urged producers to keep him in the picture, and succeeded. In 1978, at the The 50th Annual Academy Awards (1978), before starting the presentation of the sound award, Holden publicly thanked Stanwyck, who was his co-presenter, for what she did."Oh Bill!" she sighed, choking up with tears. When Barbara Stanwyck won her Honorary Academy Award in 1982, she acknowledged the passing of William Holden just four months earlier saying, "He always wished that I would get an Oscar and so, tonight, my Golden Boy, you got your wish!".
*Holden’s death was especially unfortunate and probably quite unnecessary. Evidence suggests that after an evening of drinking, Holden slipped and fell, suffering a severe laceration to his forehead. He remained conscious for at least half an hour after the accident but did not realize the severity of his injury and did not make the phone call that would surely have saved his life. He subsequently passed out and bled to death; his body was discovered some four days later.
