Grief is a soft storm
Grief is a soft storm—
not always fierce,not always loud.
Sometimes it comes on tiptoes,
rolling in like a quiet rain
that soaks the heart
long before you realize it’s falling.
Losing you didn’t break me all at once.
It happened in gentle waves:
the empty doorway,
the untouched water bowl,
the silence where your paws once echoed
like a rhythm my home depended on.
Some days the storm arrives suddenly—
a memory striking like lightning,
bright and painful
in its clarity.
Other days it settles lightly across my chest,
as soft as a drizzle
on a lonely morning.
I’ve learned not to fear it.
Because inside the storm,
there’s love.
There’s you.
Every raindrop feels like a moment we shared—
your head resting on my lap,
your joy spilling across the yard,
your eyes searching for mine
as if nothing in the world mattered more.
The storm hurts,
but it also heals.
It reminds me that grief isn’t an enemy—
it’s a language.
A gentle, aching translation of love
that has nowhere else to go.
Some nights,
when the rain taps softly against the window,
I imagine you running through heaven’s fields,
wet grass brushing your paws,
your spirit light as mist,
your tail swaying like a small, joyful breeze.
I imagine you looking back at me—
just once—
as if to say,
“I’m not gone.
You’re just learning to love me
in a different kind of weather.”
And maybe that’s what this storm truly is:
a reminder
that love doesn’t disappear
when the body does.
It lingers in the air,
in the memories,
in the softest parts of our hearts
that still ache
because they still care.
Grief is a soft storm, my love.
And every time it rains,
I feel you in it—
gentle, steady,
leading me toward the light
after the clouds finally part.
