The film also stars Helen Hayes as "Leora Arrowsmith", and the film also features, in supporting roles, Richard Bennett as "Gustav Sondelius", A.E. Anson as "Professor Max Gottlieb", Clarence Brooks as "Oliver Marchand", Alec B. Francis as "Twyford", Claude King as Dr. Tubbs, and Bert Roach as "Bert Tozer".
The screenplay was adapted from Sinclair Lewis's 1925 novel 'Arrowsmith' by Sidney Howard, departing substantially from the book regarding Arrowsmith's womanizing and other key plot elements. The Pre-Code film received four Oscar nominations, including the Academy Award for Best Picture, Best Writing, Adaptation (Sidney Howard), Best Cinematography (Ray June), and Best Art Direction (Richard Day).
Myrna Loy (August 2, 1905 – December 14, 1993) was an American film, television and stage actress during the classic era in Hollywood, appearing in films between 1925 and 1980. She shot up to major stardom with her portrayal of "Nora Charles" in W. S. van Dyke's 'The Thin Man' (1934), opposite William Powell as "Nick Charles", and she would reprise the role of "Nora Charles" five more times in five "Thin Man" sequels.
Some of her other renowned performances over the years were in W. S. van Dyke's 'Manhattan Melodrama' (1934), with Clark Gable and William Powell and Clarence Brown's 'Wife vs. Secretary' (1936), with Clark Gable and Jean Harlow, She made four films in close succession with William Powell, Jack Conway's 'Libeled Lady' (1936), which also starred Jean Harlow and Spencer Tracy, Robert Z. Leonard's 'The Great Ziegfeld' (1936), in which she played "Billie Burke" opposite Powell's "Florenz Ziegfeld", then the second Thin Man film, W. S. van Dyke's 'After the Thin Man' (1936), with William Powell and James Stewart; and then romantic comedy, Richard Thorpe's 'Double Wedding' (1937).
In 1946, she played the wife of returning serviceman Fredric March in William Wyler's 'The Best Years of Our Lives' (1946), also starring Dana Andrews, Virginia Mayo, Teresa Wright. Loy was then paired with Cary Grant in David O. Selznick's 'The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer' (1947). The film co-starred a teenage Shirley Temple. Following its success, she appeared again with Cary Grant in H. C. Potter's 'Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House' (1948), also starring Melvyn Douglas. These are just a few of Myrna Loy's many celebrated films.
