Greta Garbo
Swedish actress Greta Garbo as "Susan Lenox" / "Helga Ohlin" and Clark Gable as "Rodney Spencer" in an American Pre-Code film, adapted from the novel of the same name by David Graham Phillips, 'Susan Lenox (Her Fall and Rise)’ (1931), which was directed and produced by Robert Z. Leonard for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
The film also featured Danish actor Jean Hersholt as "Karl Ohlin", John Miljan as "Wayne Burlingham", Alan Hale as "Jeb Mondstrum", Hale Hamilton as "Mike Kelly", Hilda Vaughn as "Astrid", Russell Simpson as the Doctor, Cecil Cunningham as "Madame Panoramia" / "Pansy", and Ian Keith as "Robert Lane".
After fleeing her cruel uncle and an arranged marriage to a lout, "Helga Ohlin" falls in love with a kind architect, "Rodney Spencer" (Clark Gable). However, circumstances of her flight force her to become a woman of "easy virtue" when she joins a circus troupe and changes her name to "Susan Lenox". She "knows other men" (carnally), as a "woman of the world", yet she continues to search for the man, "Rodney Spencer"(Clark Gable), with whom she has fallen in love.
It was the only film in which Greta Garbo ever appeared with Clark Gable. The notoriety of the novel, and its scandalous tale alone, was enough for British censors to ban it from being released before they even viewed it. However, with a few deletions of controversial scenes, it was finally approved in the United Kingdom with a new title: 'The Rise of Helga'.
