Geraldine Chaplin (born 31st July, 1944)


She has appeared in films since 1952 and her contribution to Spanish cinema culminated in her being awarded the gold medal by the Spanish Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences in 2006. She has appeared in Spanish, French, Italian, British, and American films during her career, and she is a daughter of film legend Charlie Chaplin, as the first of eight children with his fourth wife, Oona O'Neill.
She appeared first as a child actress, alongside her siblings, in her father Charlie Chaplin's comedy-drama film 'Limelight' (1952), which was written, produced, directed by, and starring Charlie Chaplin, and adapted from a novella by Charlie Chaplin titled 'Footlights'. The film also featuring Claire Bloom, Nigel Bruce, Sydney Earl Chaplin, and Buster Keaton in a cameo. Geraldine Chaplin's first film appearance as an adult was in the French crime film, 'Par un beau matin d'été' (1965) which was directed by Jacques Deray and which also starred Jean-Paul Belmondo.
She made her anglophone acting debut in her Golden Globe nominated portrayal of “Tonya” in David Lean's film adaptation of Boris Pasternak’s ‘Doctor Zhivago’ (1965), also starring Omar Sharif as “Dr. Yuri Zhivago’ and Julie Christie as “Lara Antipova”.
Geraldine Chaplin received her second Golden Globe nomination for Robert Altman's ‘Nashville’ (1975), also starring Ned Beatty, Karen Black, Ronee Blakley, Keith Carradine, Shelley, Jeff Goldblum, Barbara Harris, Lily Tomlin, and Keenan Wynn.
She played her own grandmother “Hannah Chaplin’ in ‘Chaplin’ (1992), a biographical comedy-drama film about the life of her father, English comedian Charlie Chaplin. It was produced and directed by Richard Attenborough and also featured Robert Downey Jr., Marisa Tomei, Dan Aykroyd, Penelope Ann Miller and Kevin Kline. Geraldine Chaplin received her third Golden Globe nomination for her role in ‘Chaplin’.
Geraldine Chaplin has also appeared in a wide variety of critically recognized Spanish and French films. Her French films include ‘Les Uns et les Autres’ (1981), ‘La vie est un Roman’ (1983), and the Jacques Rivette experimental films ‘Noroît’ (1976) and ‘L'Amour par terre’ (1984).
Geraldine Chaplin is perhaps best known for her appearances in Spanish films. She was the partner of director Carlos Saura for 12 years until 1979, starring in his films ‘Ana y los lobos’ (1973), ‘Cría Cuervos’, (1976), ‘Elisa, vida mía’ (1977), and ‘Mamá cumple cien años’ (1979). She was awarded a Goya Award for her role in ‘En la ciudad sin límites (2002), and was nominated again for ‘El orfanato’ (2007). As previously stated, her contribution to Spanish cinema culminated in her being awarded the gold medal by the Spanish Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences in 2006.
Most recently, 2018 she starred in ‘Rosso Istria’, an Italian movie by Maximiliano Hernando Bruno based on Norma Cossetto and the foibe massacres. In 2019, she played the Duchess of Windsor in season 3 of the Netflix period drama series ‘The Crown’.
