RAINBOW CAP OVER A STORM CLOUD
RAINBOW CAP OVER A STORM CLOUDThis happened in Oklahoma, just outside Tulsa .. late afternoon, when the light starts turning warm and everything goes quiet for a second.
The storm cloud was building tall like a wall, and then this thin, smooth “cap” formed right on top… and suddenly it lit up with rainbow colors, like a glossy layer reflecting the sun.
What you’re seeing is a pileus (cap) cloud with iridescence. It forms when a strong thunderstorm updraft pushes moist air upward fast, creating a smooth layer above the main cloud. The rainbow shimmer happens because sunlight diffracts through tiny, evenly sized droplets/ice crystals in that thin cap.
Where also this can appear :
Best chances during active storm seasons in the Great Plains (TX/OK/KS/NE), the Southeast, Florida, and near higher terrain like the Rockies. Look for it late afternoon to sunset, when storms are growing and the sun is low.
