A molten horizon

A molten horizon, a ribbon of color stretching across the water—

warm light on the waves, cool tones stacked above it, like layers of glass.

What can create color bands like this? When sunlight hits tiny water droplets or ice crystals, it can diffract and scatter into separated wavelengths—similar to cloud iridescence (and sometimes a high, wide “fire-rainbow” effect when ice crystals are aligned just right).
