Trivia of Marlene Dietrich
Trivia of Marlene Dietrich
*Dietrich never had ambitions to become cinema’s fêted androgynous femme fatale. As a young woman, her aspirations were orchestral, as she was an accomplished violinist. In 1922, Dietrich landed her first job playing soundtracks for silent films, but was fired after four weeks due to a wrist injury that hindered her ability. Soon after, she tried her hand at dramatics. The rest is history.
*Despite her status as one of Hollywood's most legendary sex symbols, Dietrich was known to be most comfortable indulging her fantasy of being a "typical hausfrau," cleaning house, cooking chicken soup and comforting those in need of consoling. Bette Davis, who co-founded the USO's Hollywood canteen, adored Dietrich for her devotion to the project, and remembered Dietrich as being equally likely to be dancing with U.S. servicemen or be found down on her knees avidly scrubbing the canteen's kitchen floors.
*Known for her strong political convictions, Marlene Dietrich was never one to mince her words. When approached by the Nazi Party to perform in propaganda films, she turned them down with a ferocious ‘NEIN’. A staunch anti-fascist, during Hit*er’s dictatorship she renounced her German citizenship and became a fully fledged American. She also created a fund with Billy Wilder to assist Jews and dissidents to escape to the US.
*Dietrich was afflicted by bacillophobia, an intense fear of germs. This would lead Hollywood insiders to call her ‘The Queen of Ajax’.
*She was BFFs with Mae West.
*Dietrich wrote a book of poetry that was published in 2005 by her daughter. The book is titled Night Thoughts. This poetry book was written on her last days when she was bedridden. Her secretary Norma, published a recollection of decades of phone conversations with Marlene. She also had a book made of a collection of letters she exchanged with Hemingway.
