Bette Davis
Bette Davis as "Gabrielle Maple" and Leslie Howard as "Alan Squier" in an American crime drama film by Archie Mayo for Warner Brothers Pictures, 'The Petrified Forest' (1936), adapted from Robert E. Sherwood's 1934 Broadway play of the same name.
The film also features Humphrey Bogart as "Duke Mantee", Geneviève Tobin as "Mrs. Chisholm", Dick Foran as "Boze Hertzlinger", Joseph Sawyer as "Jackie", Porter Hall as "Jason Maple", Charley Grapewin as "Gramp Maple", Paul Harvey as "Mr. Chisholm", Adrian Morris as "Ruby", and Slim Thompson as "Slim". The film is set in the town of Black Mesa, Arizona, at the edge of "The Petrified Forest National Park".
The studio originally wanted Edward G. Robinson to play the role of "Duke Mantee", but Leslie Howard insisted that Humphrey Bogart reprise the role of "Duke Mantee" that he had originated on the Broadway stage. Playing the role boosted Humphrey Bogart's Hollywood career, and in gratitude, Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall named their daughter born in 1952 "Leslie Howard Bogart" in honour of Leslie Howard, who had been tragically killed in a plane crash when the German air force shot down his BOAC flight from Lisbon to Bristol during World War II.
