The actress began her career in entertainment as a model in 1937 and switched to cinema by signing a contract with a Hollywood company.
Hayward was one of the actresses who auditioned for the role of Scarlett O'Hara in the 1939 epic Gone With the Wind, which Vivien Leigh eventually took on.
Hayward initially took small roles in films, and thanks to her acting ability in dramatic films, she established herself in the late 1940s.
She received her first Academy Award nomination for Best Actress in 1947 for Smash-Up: The Story of a Woman (1947), followed by four more nominations and a win in 1958 playing the criminal Barbara Graham, who received the death penalty and was executed in a gas chamber in the film I Want to Live! (I Want to Live!).
The actress died in 1975 from cancer.
