Jan Murray
Jan Murray (1916–2006), born Murray Janofsky, a legendary comedian, actor, and game show host. Murray first made his mark in the Borscht Belt resorts of the Catskills during the 1930s, captivating audiences with his sharp wit and timing. By the 1940s and 1950s, he had become a marquee performer in Las Vegas, including headlining at the Flamingo Hotel in its inaugural year.Murray transitioned seamlessly to television, appearing on shows hosted by Milton Berle, Jerry Lewis, Steve Allen, Dean Martin, and Jackie Gleason. From 1966 to 1980, he was a regular panelist on The Hollywood Squares, appearing in nearly 250 episodes, and also competed on numerous other celebrity game shows. His acting career spanned decades with guest roles on Dr. Kildare, The Lucy Show, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., Fantasy Island, and films such as The Busy Body (1967) and Tarzan and the Great River (1967).
Murray retired at 83, citing asthma as a factor affecting his comedic timing. He passed away on July 2, 2006, at the age of 89 in Beverly Hills, California. He is interred at Hillside Memorial Park in Culver City, leaving behind a legacy of laughter, television, and classic comedy.
