Jean Harlow, Joan Crawford, and Constance Bennett
Jean Harlow, Joan Crawford, and Constance Bennett, three of the most established Hollywood actresses during the Pre-code era, as they appear in the Walt Disney Pictures cartoon, Burt Gillett’s ‘Mickey's Gala Premier’ (1933), animated by Ed Love, and with music by Frank Churchill. Joan Crawford is clearly depicted as her “Sadie Thompson” character in Lewis Milestone’s ‘Rain’ (1932), and many have said the actress depicted on the right is not Constance Bennett but rather Bette Davis. But Bette Davis was arguably not the established star that Jean Harlow, Joan Crawford, and Constance Bennett were in 1933. Bette Davis broke out as a star as prominent as they were the following year in John Cromwell’s ‘Of Human Bondage’ (1934), and that major stardom was solidified the following year when she won the Best Actress Oscar for Alfred E. Green’s ‘Dangerous’ (1935). The voice of Mickey Mouse in the cartoon was performed by Walt Disney himself, the voice of Minnie Mouse was performed by Marcellute Garner, and the voice of Pluto was performed by Pinto Colvig. Comedian Jerry Lester provided most of the celebrity voices in the cartoon.
