Henry VIII'S visits to Leeds Castle

Henry and Katherine of Aragon stayed at Leeds Castle for one night on 22 may 1520 on their journey from Greenwich Palace to Dover.
The were heading to France to meet King Francis I on the Field of the cloth of Gold during the following month.
The king and queen were accompanied by an entourage of 5000 of courtiers and attendants. As they continued their journey towards the coast, the royal party took venison and dairy butter from the Leeds estate to France.

During 1532, after returning from France, Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn stayed at Leeds Castle on their journey to London.

In early October 1544, Henry was reunited with Katherine Parr at Leeds Castle after his return from the Boulogne campaign.
The Castle remained in Henry’s ownership throughout his reign, but after his death , Edward VI gave the estate to Anthony St Leger as a reward for suppressing the rebellion in Ireland.
