Evelyn Louise Keyes


 Evelyn Louise Keyes (1916–2008), an accomplished actress best remembered for her role as Suellen O’Hara in the 1939 classic Gone with the Wind. Beginning her career as a chorus girl at 18, Keyes quickly rose in Hollywood, working under Cecil B. DeMille and starring in Columbia Pictures’ B dramas and mysteries. She delivered memorable performances in films such as Here Comes Mr. Jordan (1941), The Jolson Story (1946), The Mating of Millie, and The Seven Year Itch (1955) alongside Marilyn Monroe.

Keyes’ personal life was as eventful as her career, including marriages to Barton Bainbridge Sr., director Charles Vidor, John Huston, and bandleader Artie Shaw. She retired from major film roles in 1956 but remained connected to the industry. Evelyn Keyes passed away on July 4, 2008, from cancer and complications of Alzheimer’s disease. She is interred at Waco Baptist Church Cemetery in Haralson County, Georgia, leaving behind a legacy of classic Hollywood charm and talent.
