Jean-Marie Leclair

May 10, 1697: French Baroque composer and violinist Jean-Marie Leclair was born in Lyon. He studied dance and violin in Turin, Italy before returning to Paris in 1723 where he played at the Concert Spirituel, the main semi-public music series. Named 'ordinaire de la musique' by King Louis XV in 1733, he resigned in 1737 and was then engaged by the Princess of Orange (Anne, Princess Royal), serving three months annually at her court in Leeuwarden from 1738-43 and working in The Hague as a private maestro di cappella for the remainder of the year. He returned to Paris in 1743, and until his death in 1764, he served the Duke of Gramont.
